to cinnamon toast crunch to lucky charms, get more whole grain than any other ingredient... without question. just look for the white check. >> terry: in the news this saturday morning, january 21, blade needed rain hits the bay area in the first big storm of the year and san francisco police arrest three occupy protestors after they occupied a hotel. >> let's start with the important forecast. >> lisa: good morning. look at the heavy snow coming down in the sierra nevada. cold front has pushed down. we are looking at the bulk of the activity, snow levels already lowering. snow at lake level. upwards of about half a foot.

most of it above 7,000 feet. locally back home, santa rosa and windsor, looking at light rain. out towards vacaville and dublin and hayward a light shower. down around the south bay, we're looking at the hills, a little wet and down through watsonville and ben lomond continuing to pick up rain. they picked up over 6 inches in the past 24 hours. santa rosa nearly three inches and rest of the bay area a healthy inch are so except for san jose. they were around three-quarters of an inch. we'll talk about more rain will come tomorrow and look ahead all coming up. the first big rain of 2012 was welcomed by many. things are calming down this morning but the storm did bring flooded streets and downed trees and very slow moving traffic. >> we knew it was just a matter of time before the rain returned

to the bay area and made rivers out of north bay streets. >> we need it. so it's trying to get more rain and we need it. >> reporter: it can be a pain if you are out in it. ben made a road trip. >> from sacramento, it took me three and a half hours. >> a drive you normally could do in an hour and a half. >> it's ridiculous, it's pouring and flooded. >> reporter: he counted six accidents during had his trip. a slow commute all around. after all it is the first good rain we've seen in a while which for some was good for business. >> he is in construction. he ventured out tonight on a milk run for his toddler. some were shopping for friday night fun indoors. >> nothing else, stay closed doors today.

>> terry: mill valley, fire crews rushed to fill sandbags to prevent damage. fire chief says the rain came down so quickly it caused flooding outside joe's taco lounge and 2:00 a.m. club. at about 10:00 last night two fire crews were called out and prevented water from getting into those businesses. >> rough weather is not deterring occupy protestors in san francisco. they plan another rally at 2:00 in the afternoon in the financial district. hundreds of occupied protestors filled the streets and head to the abandoned hotel on van ness smashed windows and more. right now basically stealing

from people. >> they headed the vacant hotel to find the occupiers. san francisco police tried to stop them from getting in with a line at the hotel and confrontation got loud. someone busted out several windows of the bentley car dealership. this was a march that started in downtown and got tangled up on the way. >> after an hour right here. >> what do you think? >> i grew up with the movement. >> in anticipation of the demonstration, wells fargo boarded up their branch at market and drum and they closed early just to make sure. bank of america branch also closed early. at the start of the march, they had a dance at justin hermann plaza. police estimated about thousand people.

protests. >> demonstrators against abortion. it will mark the anniversary of the supreme court's roe v. wade decision. it legalize abortion in this country. they will rally that support the position at 11:00 in morning. there be tents set up to protect them from rain. anti-protestors will march toward the plaza in the eighth annual walk for life. >> a kidnapped 12-year-old girl is safe this morning the man suspected of abducting her is dead. san jose police shot and killed the man yesterday afternoon. investigators are trying to figure out why he kidnapped the girl. an amber alert went out and tip led officers to a townhouse where they say lee was holding

her hostage. >> the suspect fired several rounds from inside the apartment. the fit the officers believe that the victim was in imminent danger. >> terry: because of the gunfire police decided on a hostage rescue and forced their way inside where the s.w.a.t. team shot and killed lee. 12-year-old was not hurt. she was taken to the hospital to be checked out. police say a pair of thugs is using a fake craig of the ad to lure victims to oakland. they place an ad talking about a car for sale. at the very last minute, people responding are told to meet the seller off of 580 off of harrison street in lake merritt. when people get there they are robbed by two african-american males. >> a man has admitted to starting a fire that forced 10,000 people to abandon their homes.

fire broke out on noon on thursday. 80 mile-an-hour winds spread the flames. it ungefld six square miles, 29 homes burned to the ground. man that started the fire says it begin after he discarded fireplace ashes. >> coming up next, why the chancellor of u.c. san francisco homes to make a declaration of financial independence from the u.c. system. new ideas of improving the life of minorities as california's

the student protestors pepper-sprayed by u.c. campus police will not face criminal charges. this video of officers douglas them with pepper spray sparked

worldwide outrage and an investigation. the district attorney announced there is not enough evidence to pursue charges against the ten students for failing to disperse. in how campus police handled the situation is still ongoing right turn san francisco is exploring way to change its relationship with the university of california but the school says they need to raise revenues to avoid a deficit in next three years and they need more financial independence. chancellor says the board will be different than the other ten campuses. >> we don't have undergrads. we're not a general campus, we're a house campus and it's our hope in having a board that focuses specifically on ucs. if we could over achieve.

>> they want to pay for only what it needs. new state jobless numbers offer a glimmer of hope. california unemployment rate fell last month thanks to job growth in construction and seasonal hiring, information services and health and education and even government. a breakdown of the bay area that unemployment is lowest in marin, san mateo counties, higher in the south bay, 8.9% and highest in the east bay where it's 9.3%. the recession has left its mark just about everybody from the young to the old to the rich or poor. one group is struggling. we're talking about young men of color. that is the focus of a hearing in oakland, one of the larger problems is the rate of minority men in prison. many says there needs to be more

destabilize our atmosphere. sutro, a beautiful picture and we do still have rain around. bulk of the activity, cold front it has pushed to the east of us. more rain to come. here is a look at dive doppler 7 and you notice the snow in the sierra nevada. most will be on the west side of the basin and in the southern sierra around king's canyon. lake level, a little bit. the highest elevations picking up a couple feet. back home, notice still some shower activity. winter storm warning here in effect throughout the afternoon. some very gusty winds up to 125 miles an hour at ridge tops in the mountains. also around vak canville is wet and sea ranch further further south things are dry but in

orinda, a few light showers and south bay we're talking about los gatos, moving towards morgan hill looking for some light shower activity accompanied by gusty winds out of the west at 24 miles an hour. novato, 36 mile-an-hour wind gusts at the coast gusting to 25. not so bad around san jose. we will look for the temperatures to stay in the 50s. a little bit of sunshine making it feel good but the numbers are dropping off with the cold front. we were in the mid-50s and breezy winds. showers and breezy this morning. more snow for the sierra and next storm arriving tomorrow is going to last right through monday morning commute and only gets going tomorrow morning. i'll explain in just a moment. heaviest rain anywhere from about two inches in the urban areas. one to two inches, up to six inches. here is the next system right on track for tomorrow.

we're still looking at this storm, two to four inches another lake level and winding down throughout the afternoon. if you are headed up very windy conditions, not sure if they will be running lifts. high surf is going to get going here today. around 10:00 through 10:00 tomorrow morning. here is a look at the rest of the rain. we will continue to dry out with peeks of sun. here is tonight. tomorrow morning, scattered showers, look at 9:00, scattered activity right on through 3:00. the game, 7:00 we're going to call it light scattered rain. then here comes the heavy stuff. look at the overnight hours, 5:00 in the morning towards the commute will be very wet and then after that, once again we are looking dry for the foreseeable future. 58 in oakland today with scattered showers. still breezy out there.

more than 7 million people on the petition drive. a san bruno family is finally home this morning, 16 months after that deadly pipeline explosion developed the neighborhood. they are returning to the small house but a brand-new dream home. here is a vic lee with an exclusive preview. >> this is the family room. we're short on furniture but we're ready for the football game on sunday. >> reporter: he called it a milestone in the healing process for his family. their old one-story home had extensive smoke and water damage. they decided to tear it down and build their dream home. a five bedroom house, one that is big enough to accommodate four growing children. they added 900 square feet and a second are areneeded more space and this was good opportunity because the roof had to come off. >> it's been a long and difficult 16 months since the explosion forced them out. they have all gone through

therapy and living out of suitcases has been difficult. >> kids lost all their toys and clothes, all the things that gave them their identity which made it a challenge. >> reporter: they watched their new home being built little by little. xr steps to make sure the kids would be comfortable. >> they all ran up and the block. >> reporter: new house is a symbol of hope in a neighborhood that lost homes and lives. >> we want it to be back and be a part of the neighborhood. it's important for our family to come back to make a statement. we've survived this. we're okay and we're going to move forward. >> reporter: they say they are excited to be back home. they are also angry at pg&e. they are one of many homeowners suing the utility.

you can see we've got snow on the ground. before you pick up your skis and head that way, so far the storms have been a disappointment for the ski resorts. picked up only a couple inches on thursday. the snow level expected to drop this morning, we're not talking about a major every resort is ready to go at ever level kind of snowstorm. is that a fair assessment? >> yeah, the higher base around kirkwood, picked up a couple feet at 7,000 feet, at lake level, maybe four or five inches. so right now we do have snow at lake levels. there will be more. this next system will be winding down. is it beautiful. santa cruz back into the santa cruz closer to home, partly

cloudy skies. the rain with gusty winds and live doppler 7-hd shows it is moving in the central valley and the snow in the sierra nevada. spotty rain showers along the coast. heavy snow with temperatures right around freezing or a couple degrees above freezing. most of the activity the west slopes of the sierra nevada, southern sierra and back home, light showers up around novato and sea ranch, wet weather. south of 580 into moraga, looking at wet weather. here in sunnyvale, looking at light to mod lat rain. getting ready to move into campbell and los gatos, look at the winds, still a factor at 36 miles an hour at the airport. front has passed through and westerly winds behind it will keep it breezy today. hayward is, wind gusts up to 23 miles an hour and concord at 22 miles an hour. so we're looking at upper 40s

where it's breezy. it feels chilly. numbers have dropped since 4:00 this morning. that is when the ail end of the cold front was pushing through the bay area. showers and breezy this morning. still lingering showers throughout the afternoon hours, bulk of the day will be dry. snow is winding down around 3:00 4:00 hour. scattered showers arrive during the game tomorrow in the early morning, but heavy rain will hold off until the overnight hours. here is a look at satellite and radar composite. fast moving system dumping nearly 2 inches of rain in san francisco. next storm system quickly at its heels. we'll get a break later in the day in the mountains. we are looking a little bit more snow. this storm system dumped the snow in higher elevation of 7,000 feet and lake level about half a foot. high surf advisory will continue throughout the day in to

tomorrow, strong swells, breaking waves up to 19 feet. be careful if you are head the out. here is a look at the rest of the rain. spotty showers through 5:00 and through the overnight hours, we have the clouds around. tomorrow morning, light showers. here we are in the afternoon, 9:00 hour, in the north bay, in the afternoon we have scattered showers right through the game. 6:00, 7:00, we could see light showers. look what happens until midnight that is when the front moves on through. then it's going to take the rest of the rain with it on monday and then we are back to a dry weather pattern. today, partly cloudy, chance a shower. upper 50s in fremont and san jose. then tomorrow we'll have the light rain around game time on and off. it gets heavier in the evening hours. it won't be rain free but it won't be down pour either. then we'll look for very pleasant weather but doesn't

look like any more after this one. >> terry: nicer weather next week, does this had mean we're going back to that pattern? >> lisa: i hope not but it does look dry. >> terry: thanks a lot. mountain view could be the next city to ban plastic bags and styrofoam containers in santa clara county where you find mountain view, palo alto, sunnyvale and san jose have already passed measures to try to protect local areas from plastic trash. it's estimated as much of a quarter of the space in u.s. disposal sites are taking up by styrofoam. the stuff lasts just about forever. now from is a pilot program started by surfers that could change that. dan ashley reports. >> reporter: like everyone else,

surfers depend on a clean and healthy ocean. a lot of beaches are littered with trash and one big problem is styrofoam. >> it's breaks down to smaller and smaller pieces and gets consumed by sea life and winds up in the food stream that oftentimes winds up on our plates. >> michael is founder of a new organization trying to get surfers and their industry to go green. one of their first projects focuses on styrofoam the type used to pack electronics. >> it's expanded polystyrene. >> blanks are the core of the surfboard. experts called shapers carefully carve them. most blanks are made of new styrofoam. now, they are using recycled

foam for their blanks. they say it's a great pd. >> i probably wouldn't no difference with which what i wanted. >> it sounds great but it cost a lot of money to collect styrofoam. it may be lightweight but as you know from around your house, it takes up a lot of room. >> it's about 90% air. so basically you are trucking around air. >> that is where sustainable surf comes in. they organized a pilot program to move the styrofoam cheaply. starting in november they put collection boxes at surf shops and few other locations in san francisco and santa cruz. sponsors paid for the material and customers started bringing in foam right away. >> the bin is full now. so the response has been very good. >> volunteers pick it up and store it in the presidio.

welcome back. we are looking out from the sutro camera golden gate park, sunset district and some cloud. we'll be getting a spritz have rain here and there, but tomorrow it will be coming down again just in time for the 49ers game and speaking of that 49ers game. north bay realtor is hoping 49er fever will help her sell joe montana's house. its 500 acre estate in calistoga mansion, guesthouse and olive grove and even more than that. the price has come down, reasonably priced now.

he once had the house listed at appropriately enough, $49 million. now being offered for a mere $35 million and yes, that is 31% discount. >> buying your first home can be one of the biggest thrills in life. it can be a huge headache if something breaks. one newlywed company had their first disaster before they moved into their home. >> going to make the place our own. >> reporter: they were excited to move in very there very first home in this condominium complex. >> we were building together. that was special, painting walls >> they also bought this new washer drier combination from sears. they sent a delivery crew to install the machine and the couple was ready to move into their new place until disaster struck.

>> quarter to midnight, i got a phone call, they were flooding below us because we weren't there. >> they rushed over to the condo and found a big puddle under their washing machine. it had leaked under the floor and into the unit below. >> the washing machine is already flooding and unit below us. >> reporter: they contacted sears and right away they replaced the hose on the washer that stopped the leak. however, their new home was already damaged. they had to pull out a wall and stove behind it and the floor that covers the entire first floor. repairs costing nearly $30,000. >> you got your new playing. wait, you need to replace the flooring. >> reporter: it was tough way to start a new life. here the furniture is pushed to another side.
